RYEH LAUNCHS DIGITAL HUB IN HAGADERA CAMP-GARISSA COUNTY

The Refugee Youth Education Hub (RYEH) is proud to launch our Digital Innovation Hub in Hagadera Camp, Garissa County. Under the leadership of RYEH’s founder Mr Abdullahi Mire and using the funds awarded to him as the UNHCR Nansen Global Laureate in 2023, our new Digital Innovation Hub will equip young refugees with essential digital skills, help them acquire jobs, and through job seeker clubs and partnerships with private sector businesses help create a network of peer-learning, information sharing, and collaboration.

On 20th  September 2024, Mr. Mire and our colleagues cut the ceremonial ribbon while young people from the camp cut a rug with dance performances for the assembled partners and dignitaries. The excitement among the youth was visible on their faces as they powered up one of the 70 brand new desktop computers in the Hub. They’re ready to get started training in areas such as coding, graphic design, and digital marketing.  Together with the community, we are providing tools that will allow youth in Dadaab to take control of their futures.

The launch of the Digital Innovation Hub was not just a milestone for the Refugee Youth Education Hub but also for the wider Garissa community. In a region where opportunities are  limited, this hub signifies an investment in connecting youth to one another and to the world so they can seek out the opportunities that will allow them to pursue a brighter future. Abdullahi Mire expressed deep pride in the collaboration that made the Hub possible, “This Hub is a powerful step towards breaking the barriers that have long limited the youth in Garissa. It’s about giving our young people, especially refugees, a chance to dream, innovate, and take control of their futures in the digital age. Seeing this vision realized is a personal and community triumph.”-Abdullahi Mire Founder  Refugee Youth Education Hub.

The Digital Innovation Hub is a reflection of Mire’s commitment to giving back to his community and ensuring that young people, especially refugees, are not left behind in the global digital revolution. One of the most exciting aspects of the hub is the introduction of Job Seeker Clubs, structured cohorts, provided a variety of support to accommodate different skill levels and different ambitions. These cohorts will form a network of youth trying to uplift one another and take advantage of opportunities to start learning and earning right now. Through a rigorous selection process, the hub ensures that motivated youth from both the refugee and host communities get the chance to enhance their skills and build promising careers in the digital space.

Our vision is for the Hub is clear: to nurture a generation of digitally savvy youth capable of competing in the global job market. The initiative has already sparked excitement and inspiration among the youth, many of whom see this as a life-changing opportunity that was unimaginable just a few years ago. By investing in the Youth Digital Hub, the Refugee Youth Education Hub is not only equipping young people with digital tools but also giving them the confidence and hope to reshape their futures.
